- And we are back to Mexico for International Sandwich Sunday! More specifciall, we are back to Pueblo for an another sandwich from that city, the Chancla Poblana. It’s doused in sauce similar to the Pambazo but the flavor profile of the filling is different. Savory and spicy, this is going to be one of the great ones. Just sayin’.

I would plus it up with a nice cold Mexican cerveza
When Barry switches on the neon light under the cooker hood, it feels like being woken up to find yourself tied to a chair in a Tarantino movie.

Bravo!

I have never had a bad mexican sandwich. All so good.
I love Mexican types of sandwiches 🤤 Great job, nice!
Rick wrote this recipe up for NYT cooking. He suggested hogie rolls, or something that is soft in the center, but with a thin crust. He also admits this is a messy sandwich.
I know it's not traditional, but wonder if you took some of the mixture for the saucey component, then turned the rest of it into a spread. Maybe easier to eat.
Someone also suggested using leftover chorizo sauce in chilaquiles. Not a sandwich, but a tasty dish and a great idea
Chancla: What your grandma throws at you when you get fresh. 🩴
Had to look it up. Flip-flops. My Italian friends it's a house slipper getting thrown. Ha, ha!!!
I wonder if Chancla bread is anything like the Italian Ciabatta bread. Both mean “Slipper”. Either way, that sandwich looks gd delicious!
Barry saying a plus up should be obvious....Really Barry? All the condiments sauces spices and potions in your pantry of wonders and the plus up is OBVIOUS?? Usually no,but I guessed cilantro.Dang tasty looking sandwich.
There's other Mexican sandwiches that load up on fresh cilantro like cemitas, that's what I'm guessing.
Yay! I love Rick Martinez, culinary genius!
35K Subs!!!!! Congrats sir!! Keep up the great work!!! ❤️❤️❤️
WHOO HOO!GO BARRY!
Thank you so much!
looks incredible!
As someone with the cilantro gene, i appreciate your consideration for us lost souls 🫡
That looks awesome.
that looks amazinggg
Thanks for understanding the gene thing regarding cilantro tasting like soap. So many folks don't know or refuse to believe it. My daughter has this gene and has always stated it's like someone poured dishwashing soap over the dish; that cannot be good. She loves avocados so she gets to keep her California girl card. I don't like avocados and my California girl card is always in danger of being snatched away. hahahaha Thanks for sharing, Barry!
Boy, do I miss Mexican chorizo! I guess if I weren't lazy I could make my own...
Sandwich looked amazing! 🇲🇽
Cook the cilantro. If it tastes soapy to you. Just throw it into the salsa near the end, you'll get the good flavor without the soap.
Holy crap I actually guessed the plus up!!😊
this is something i can make. the ingredients are available locally and i have the required tools. and yes, i love cilantro!
This looks really good!😅
Without the lettuce and avocado, it's basically a Mexican Sloppy Joe!
I bet that tastes excellent, going down.
delicious!!!!
Concise, informative, and well put together!
Sandwich looks great!
Still waiting on that Torta Ahogada, Barry!
I was shocked you were even going to do a plus up. But you were right, good choice. If I just bite cilantro I can see why people think "soap". Added to a salsa or in with other things it's completely different. I make a chutney that is cilantro leaves, chili, scallion and lime juice. No soap taste at all.
Kind of like a Mexican sloppy joe. Looks amazing!!
recently found your channel. really enjoying it! good job
Welcome aboard!
A rare 10???!!!! Awesome.
Yummm, sounds delicious
When Barry says, “It’s a bit of a process,” I already know it would be an every-pan-in-the-kitchen and every-cuss-word-I know bloodbath for me.
I prefer to call it "cilantno".
that looks so good!
"If you have the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap - " Funny because I always felt like cilantro tasted like how stink bugs smell..
Interesting! I always think stink bugs smell exactly like green bananas.
YYUM!!!
I was really excited because I thought you were cooking a slipper sandwich 😕
Yep that looks pretty awesome. Thanks man.
😁
Wait, is this the chancla all of my Hispanic friends are afraid of? Doesn't seem scary...
It’s kind of like a pambazo!
_"10"_
:O
I am not to proud to admit I did NOT see the cilantro coming
It’s kinda like a Mexican sloppy Joe. A sloppy José, if you will
oaxaca or chihuahua cheese and give it the grilled cheese treatment. Or pickled jalapenos and Salvadorian crema.
Maybe could've also used some sour cream to plus this up. Cilantro is also a good choice tho.
Mexican manwich
This screams for a knife and fork.
Since you liked this you should try the mollete breakfast sandwich next!
Loved it. ruclips.net/video/eL9553Xz-Eg/видео.html
@@SandwichesofHistory My apologies, I recently subscribed and didn't catch that one yet. My spouse and I are having a lot of fun watching your videos together on our lunch break. You have given us plenty of inspiration already for sandwiches to try, so truly thank you!
What would be a good substitute if Mexican chorizo is not available? Same with the bread? I can get the chilis, oregano, avocado and maybe the cheese where I live but there's no way to find Mexican meat products or freshly baked Mexican bread anywhere.
I would say at that point make your own chorizo by making a seasoning blend and mixing with ground sausage. As for the bread, a french roll with a good crust would work.
How about replacing the lettuce with savoy cabbage?
Confession: I have the cilantro tastes like soap gene but I still eat it/don't really mind the flavor.
A lot of like or dislike of cilantro is based on experience and familiarity. Lots of people with the gene who grew up eating cilantro like it anyway. I have the gene and didn't grow up with it, but I've had it enough as an adult that I will still eat it in small quantities (less than what Barry used, though). If it's in a salsa or guacamole, it doesn't automatically ruin it for me anymore. Otherwise, I just sub in parsley, which is different, but good.
I'm thinking you might want to invest in a table to put your plate on so you can use both hands to eat the sandwich. Less mess 😃
You should collab with ordinary sausage.
Drink up that bun!
Can you say the specific brand of Mexican chorizo you used? I like chorizo with eggs, but most of what I've had is too intense all by itself as a main meat. I'm guessing I would have plussed up thi sandwich with a layer of plain omelet.
I'm with you about a chorizo-only sandwich being too intense. That was my thought the whole time. Perhaps Barry sources a milder version. I'd still like to try this one tho
What is the day job, if you don't mind my asking? I imagine you'd be a fun boss 😊
Is this the first 9.75???❤
:)
Thats a mean torta, heart burn all the way though
Thankfully, no issues for me.
@@SandwichesofHistory I love chorizo, especially the green kind, but it gets me every time.
I’m going to ask this of the general audience because I’m curious:
“Chancla” means slipper in Spanish and “Ciabatta” means slipper in Italian, both are names for bread. Are they the same type of bread in both cultures, or just similarly named?
I think I’ve answered my own question, and the answer is “no” not the same type of bread. Per NYT Cooking:
“Sold in the markets and street stalls of Puebla, chanclas poblanas are made with a slightly flattened, flour-dusted, oval-shaped bun called pan para chanclas which gets its rise and flavor from pulque, a fermented alcoholic drink made from the maguey plant. (Chancla, which means flip-flop or sandal, refers to the shape.) Then, they’re opened and stuffed with chorizo and bathed in a rich tomato-guajillo salsa. They’re messy, but they can be eaten with your hands or a fork and a knife.”
Interesting that pulque is used in baking. I’m intrigued…
Dude, you put a lot of effort into your butties, thank you.
Ugh cilantro tastes worse than soap to me. Love a good chancla though
What's your day job? You work at Subway?
Yes, you nailed it. I work at Subway.
I have the gene that makes cilantro taste like 💩
Thoughts and prayers! 😅
The reference to a day job bothers me enormously. I thought we were your day job. A poorly-paid, no bennies day job, but still.
Sloppy Jose
